Kathrein supplies DVB-T antenna for Central Asia’s tallest TV tower

The 375 m high broadcasting tower in Taschkent is not only regarded as the highest TV tower in Central Asia but is also the landmark of Uzbekistan’s capital. In spite of its great height, the tower looks very delicate, its architecture unites both modern and classical Uzbek style elements.
Technicians from the Rosenheim-based antenna specialist Kathrein recently succeeded in putting the first trial installation for DVB-T TV in Uzbekistan into operation. Through this installation, the Uzbek operating company NTRC (National Television and Radio Company of Uzbekistan) aims to provide the 2-million inhabitant metropolis with digital terrestrial TV and radio programmes in prime video and audio quality. In the coming years, both DVB-T and DVB-H, the digital transmission standard for mobile terminal devices, are to be transmitted with blanket coverage throughout Uzbekistan.
'Due to the meticulous planning done by our engineers, we were able to install the system at a height of 220 meters without any difficulties. Everyone involved was extremely satisfied with the results at acceptance and so far, broadcasting has been running interference-free,' explained Andreas Lukas, project manager of the Broadcast Antenna division at Kathrein in Rosenheim.
The television tower in Taschkent was constructed in 1985. In addition to a broadcasting system, the tower also features two observation decks, a restaurant seating 120 and a weather station. Every year, 70,000 sightseers visit the Uzbek capital’s landmark.
