TV GLOBO: Antenna for digital TV

During a festivity with high-profile politicians, TV GLOBO celebrated two important events last May: The 40-year anniversary of their subsidiary TV GLOBO MINAS and the launching of digital television in Belo Horizonte, the capital of the Brazilian federal state Minas Gerais.
KATHREIN-Mobilcom Brasil (KMB) contributed to the introduction of DTV by delivering a large-scale antenna system in UHF. As can be seen in the picture featured, the binary system actually consists of a main antenna and a spare antenna, each made up of 48 panels.
The antenna itself was designed in a joint effort between Kathrein engineers in Rosenheim and the KMB, whereas the metal structure was designed and manufactured in Brazil and then delivered to the KATHREIN-Werke, where the antenna was then completely assembled. The antenna was subsequently subjected to a detailed customer acceptance test. Both antennas were each divided into two half-shells and shipped to Brazil, where they were installed on the mountain “Serra do Cural” in Belo Horizonte.
TV GLOBO, based in Rio de Janeiro, has 4 subsidiaries and 164 partner companies and is the largest nation-wide active operator in Brazilian public television. With a market share of over 50 %, TV GLOBO not only dominates the market but also the programme range, especially with “Novelas“, which have been an export hit for years in all countries where Romance languages are spoken. In addition to TV GLOBO, there are three further operator chains with nation-wide coverage as well as 100 regional broadcast stations, who are all privately owned with the exception of a few cultural and educational channels.
In early December 2007, the Brazilian government decided to launch digital television as of February 2008, having selected the Japanese digital standard. Full implementation of DTV is scheduled to take 10 years.
