'Europaturm' grows by 5 metres
DVB-T antenna made by Kathrein on the television tower in Frankfurt

The television tower in Frankfurt got a new spire. A pilot crew from Switzerland airlifted the new DVB-T antenna with a special Russian cargo helicopter. This antenna will allow for the terrestrial reception of digital television in the Rhine-River Main-Area. The 'Europaturm' - Europe's highest television tower anyway - grew by round about 5 metres to now 335 metres.
'In the weeks before this operation, we dismounted some 20 metres of the old spire in a traditional way, using the cranes which had already been on the platforms round the tower,' graduate engineer Hans Geyer explains. The helicopter had to start four times. First, two segue-parts made of steel with a weight of 4.4 and 4.2 tons had to be airlifted. Then, the 6.2 metres long and 2.7 tons heavy GFK cylinder (fibre glass strengthened) with the integrated VHF antenna system and ,eventually, the second cylinder with the integrated UHF antenna system, 13 metres long and weighing 4.1 tons, was airlifted.
Hans Geyer points out: 'Our pilot has really made a good job of it'. The motorway close-by had to be blocked while the helicopter was in the air. Terrestrial reception of the first digital programmes is scheduled start of October.
'The clear advantage of DVB-T in this region is that the picture quality will be considerably improved, and that people additionally can use multimedia services', Hans Geyer explains. He especially takes pride in his collegue Hermann Zehentner's team mates. Hermann Zehentner developed this broadband antenna which provides a high-quality omnidirectional radiation pattern.
